Having content appear highly in the Search Results that can place doubts of your credibility, or reliability in your customers minds can really harm your business.
Typically this happens when a miss-communication, or a generally un satisfied customer of client takes it upon themselves to tell the world about their experience on their blog or forum. This is also a known tactic by under handed competitors who are trying to get one over their rivals.
The Solution:
In order to combat the negativity surrounding your brand, initially you should respond where possible. If the grievance is legitimate, or justified, contact the source of the content and get the issue resolved – that should be enough to remove negative blog post.
Responding on forums is also a great way of telling your side of the story.
However that may not be enough and you may need to promote a more positive image for your business.
How This Is Done
The target is to gain control of as many of the results for your brand (or problematic key phrase) as possible. Typically the first page or two of the Search Results is enough, due to very low amount of people who will delve deeper into the Search Results.
Typically this can be done to using SEO methods to promote already existing positive press relating to your brand.
It can also be done by creating content on your website, targeting a particular keyphrase relating to your brand (i.e. your brand name followed by “scam”).
Additional websites & social profiles can also be created, or tweaked.
How long does it take?
Much like a standard SEO campaign, it all depends on how powerful the existing results are. Typically a time-scale of three to six months is realistic – but this can vary dramatically on a case by case basis.
Is This For Real?
Yes it is! It’s actually a tactic that has been used for a few years now, but is becoming more widely known. One of the more known cases is Kate Moss’ quest to promote positive accounts of her career:
